The Syracuse Fire Fighters Association, Local 280 I.A.F.F. was formed on March 12th, 1928.

Established as a paid department in 1877 (consisting of four steamers, one hook & ladder, and one chemical wagon), the Syracuse Fire Department now operates 17 fire companies out of 11 fire stations. 

A massive modernization plan in the 70's & 80's has made it possible to locate those stations strategically around the city. The Syracuse Fire Department provides fire suppression & rescue, EMS, HAZ-MAT response, High-angle rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF), full fire prevention, inspection, and education services to the citizens of Syracuse and its visitors.

Currently, the members of the Syracuse Fire Fighters Assocaiton fill the ranks of the Syracuse Fire Department and provide fire suppression & rescue, EMS, HAZ-MAT response, High-angle rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF), and full fire prevention, inspection, and education services to the citizens of Syracuse and its visitors. Current staffing is 336 uniformed members, operating 9 Engines, 9 Mini's, 5 Trucks, 1 Heavy Rescue Company, 1 Squad Company, and an Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) Company.

The Syracuse Fire Department answered over 28,022 alarms in 2013 , and fought over 100 major fires. Our average response time to anywhere in the City of Syracuse is 3 minutes 17 seconds, which is the Best in Onondaga County!. The Syracuse Fire Department holds an ISO Class 1 rating, 1 of 2 cities in New York State to do so, and one of 57 cities nationwide.
