The Francis Hendricks Medal

The Francis Hendricks Medal has been awarded to Syracuse Fire and Police Department personnel annually since 1922. Mr. Francis J. Hendricks was born in Kingston, NY on November 23, 1834.  He came to Syracuse as a young man and established a business of photographic supplies. He served on the boards of many local businesses and organizations including banks and Syracuse University , and was elected Mayor of the City of Syracuse in 1880. He later won election as a New York State Senator from 1886 to 1891. Upon his death on June 9, 1920 he provided the funding in his will for the construction of Hendricks Chapel on the Syracuse University campus. Originally a very ornate medal containing a single diamond, the Francis Hendricks Medal became prohibitively expensive in the early 1970’s and was replaced with a simpler medallion, a citation and a gold watch.
